Ekster Antiques, My History

Hi!  My name is Caroline Verschoor and thank you for reading my blog.

I am the owner and creator of Ekster Antiques & Uniques and have a love of everything natural and original when it comes to decorating our dwellings.

I, originally, hail from The Netherlands and, after many years of living overseas, I found my way to America and settled down here, not in the least part thanks to my wonderful husband Jon-Paul, with whom I have 3 beautiful children and have shared our lovely home for the past 24 years.

I suppose my years of living in remote places like Liberia, Nigeria, Oman, Yemen and Morocco instilled in me a love of many cultures, colors and characters.  But despite these nomadic beginnings, I am a homebody at heart, and  love being settled in my simple American farmhouse, with my kids and animals close around me.

My aesthetic has not changed much over the years, and I still gravitate mostly to a clean, neutral palette, as seen in the Scandinavian or Northern European styles I grew up with.  Maybe mixed in with a little infusion of the exotic cultures I was exposed to as a young adult.

Whether my tiny room at Dutch boarding schools, or my lonely apartment in Sana'a, I always made the most of my small living quarters, and turned my limited spaces into places of calm and  comfort.  A place to call home.  To the point where my (big) boss at the World Bank called my office cubicle "Chez Caroline".... 😊

Ekster Antiques & Uniques was born, when --tragically--our first-born son, Ewan, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor at age 3 and died less than a year later as a result.  This event steered me toward leaving the busy and unnecessary alone, and pursue and  follow my heart instead, and here we are, some 20 years later, ...

I am thankful every moment of every day for the many fortunes I have encountered in my life since those days and thank my son daily.  I cherish those things that came since:  our two  beautiful, sweet, talented daughters, the freedom my lifestyle has afforded me and the many opportunities I have been given and still lie ahead...

Although I occasionally get to set up and furnish some lavish homes and successful wineries, I love nothing more than to come home to the simplicity of the humble abode I call home.  I hope you will join me on my journey as I share some of my stories on this blog..

Thanks and "Chez Caroline"
